Quality Connections On The Social Web

The race for the highest follower numbers – we’ve seen it all before in social networking.  Everyone wants to be part of the elite crowd and at the TOP of the popularity list.  With that demand, new applications that “boast the boost” of your friend / follower count on various social networks are born.  As a participant on some of the most popular social networks, there are some important factors to consider.

On MySpace, there are no friend limitations, but now they do monitor the level in which you add friends. If they suspect automation, they provide a warning. If the frequency level persists, your account can get suspended.

On Facebook, there is a 5,000 friend cap on personal profiles, but said to be lifted sometime in the near future.  Facebook also provides warnings to suspected spammers who send out too many friend requests, too many messages and join too many groups in a short amount of time. Again, your account could get suspended if you are too aggressive. For businesses, organizations and artists / public figures, Facebook provides the option for you to create a public fan page to grow your business following without fan limitation, however, it is somewhat more difficult to get those followers (aka: fans) by old fashion means if your brand is not a nationally recognized name. Though with the recent design changes, they are showing signs of improvements where fan pages are concerned.  We’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

Enter Twitter.  With the recent Twitter popularity, the increased follower account software has again made itself known. Not a day goes by when a link comes through on a direct message to a software program that has been created to boost your follow count. To address the issue, Twitter recently implemented a daily follower limit (see Twitter Follower Limit ) and will suspend your account should you be guilty of any of the offenses listed on Twitter’s Reasons for Account Suspension.

If you own a business, of course you want to make people aware of your product.  It makes perfect sense to want to reach out to as many people as you can, however, don’t you want to interact with REAL people who are interested in your product?  When you have an astrological number of followers, and have an engaged business who reciprocates by following those that follow, quality connections are of utmost importance. The quick fix may help to some degree, but in the long run, the personal connection tends to get lost, when creating new quality relationships was supposed to be the purpose of connecting in the first place.

If you are looking for a professional high quality web presence for your business on the social web, make sure you are connecting with others on a professional high quality level.

Great article Lisa. Is someone with 50.000 followers any more intelligent or a better person than someone who has just joined twitter with 56 followers. Of course not but the perception is that they are based solely on the number of followers. It’s crazy!!!! In an accelerated list however, the followers can be call girls, porn sellers, dating agencies, MLM marketers etc.. The question should be judge someone on the quality of their followers, and their relevance to your views and values. Why follow Oprah? she will NEVER communicate directly with you and she will only issue self serving tweets.

    Here endeth the lesson.

    Great site Good Luck
