Social Media Policy For Your Small Business

April 27, 2009

As technology evolves, so does our ability to connect with the world around us.  The ability to make that connection is much faster than in the past, and the connections are moving at lightning speed.  Your businesses policies should be reviewed today to make sure you include a social media policy in communications.

It is increasingly important that businesses are aware of their professional web presence online.  It is no longer something you can brush under the rug.  It’s time to review your website and make sure it’s reflecting your business for today’s modern world.  Make your social web presence a priority as well – and that includes creating a social web policy for your employees.  If you don’t have an in-house employee or staff to manage your online reputation, Virtually Ready can help create or expand your existing positive image, maintain what information is shared by your company and monitor what others are saying about your business online.

Quality Connections On The Social Web

April 24, 2009

The race for the highest follower numbers – we’ve seen it all before in social networking.  Everyone wants to be part of the elite crowd and at the TOP of the popularity list.  With that demand, new applications that “boast the boost” of your friend / follower count on various social networks are born.  As a participant on some of the most popular social networks, there are some important factors to consider.

On MySpace, there are no friend limitations, but now they do monitor the level in which you add friends. If they suspect automation, they provide a warning. If the frequency level persists, your account can get suspended.

On Facebook, there is a 5,000 friend cap on personal profiles, but said to be lifted sometime in the near future.  Facebook also provides warnings to suspected spammers who send out too many friend requests, too many messages and join too many groups in a short amount of time. Again, your account could get suspended if you are too aggressive. For businesses, organizations and artists / public figures, Facebook provides the option for you to create a public fan page to grow your business following without fan limitation, however, it is somewhat more difficult to get those followers (aka: fans) by old fashion means if your brand is not a nationally recognized name. Though with the recent design changes, they are showing signs of improvements where fan pages are concerned.  We’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

Enter Twitter.  With the recent Twitter popularity, the increased follower account software has again made itself known. Not a day goes by when a link comes through on a direct message to a software program that has been created to boost your follow count. To address the issue, Twitter recently implemented a daily follower limit (see Twitter Follower Limit ) and will suspend your account should you be guilty of any of the offenses listed on Twitter’s Reasons for Account Suspension.

If you own a business, of course you want to make people aware of your product.  It makes perfect sense to want to reach out to as many people as you can, however, don’t you want to interact with REAL people who are interested in your product?  When you have an astrological number of followers, and have an engaged business who reciprocates by following those that follow, quality connections are of utmost importance. The quick fix may help to some degree, but in the long run, the personal connection tends to get lost, when creating new quality relationships was supposed to be the purpose of connecting in the first place.

If you are looking for a professional high quality web presence for your business on the social web, make sure you are connecting with others on a professional high quality level.

Celebrities Arrive On Twitter Scene

April 17, 2009

The Red Carpet has officially been rolled out as celebrities arrive on the Twitter scene.

If you’re on Twitter, what’s your take on the recent arrival of big name celebs and how they’re approaching the Twitter scene?

Shaq has been on scene, slam-dunking tweets for fun and performing his “random acts of Shaqness”.

Jimmy Fallon has been in the game too, throwing out his tweets and supporting his Late Night show.

Ellen DeGeneres was introduced to Twitter by P. Diddy  on her show a few weeks ago and now she has become a full-fledged Tweeter.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are the first official “celeb couple” to arrive.  Ashton has recently burst on the scene in a competition with CNN, where he just won a race to beat them to 1 million followers.  As a result of his win, he is donating mosquito nets to http://www.malarianomore.org/, and has vowed to “ding dong ditch” Ted Turner in Atlanta.  Ashton is also using UStream (http://www.ustream.tv/ashton) for video communication along with his Twitter account.

Today, Oprah is expected to arrive on the Twitter scene during the airing of her show with Ashton Kutcher, whom she has donned in the show’s intro on her website as “The King of Twitter”.

Twitter can be used for many things, and it’s used for different reasons.  Some use it strictly for personal use, others for business.  Some use it for news, weather, politics and sports.  As a regular, though moderate-level user of Twitter for Small Business, I’ve seen varying opinions come across the tweet wire about the celeb’s arrival, including one request as of this morning by another tweeter to #unfollowfriday Ashton (update: and now Oprah) on what is usually known on Twitter as #followfriday, where tweeters normally recommend their favorite tweeters to others.  Update: Unfollow suggestions are also being sent out for @cnnbrk as an objection to media bias after a lack of balanced TEA Party coverage.

I would love to hear your opinion in more than 140 characters.

(@shaq) (@jimmyfallon) (@iamdiddy) (@TheEllenShow) (@mrskutcher) (@aplusk) (cnnbrk) (@oprah)

What say you, Tweeps?
