10 Factors of a Facebook Page
It is apparent to us that many Facebook users are somewhat perplexed over the difference between Facebook Profiles and Facebook Pages, so we would like to point out some of the main differences between the two for our readers.
Back in May, 2009, we also shared Five Notable Facebook Limitations Facts with you that pointed out five differences for you at that time. You should be aware that since that article was published, Facebook has since addressed the custom URL issue and this option is now available to Facebook Pages when you have more than (revised from 100 to 25) Fans via http://www.facebook.com/username/.
Many of you are already familiar with Facebook Profiles and their capabilities, but what you may not be aware of is that they are intended to be utilized for personal use only by individuals. We are sure you might still have many questions about them as well, but for this article, we are going to focus on how Facebook Pages differ.
Fan Pages are optimized to represent a business, and are separate from user profiles. They are available for use if you are an artist, business, brand, celebrity or organization – or official representative of these categories. Pages may be administered by more than one person via each personal profile. However, a personal profile is not necessary to have a Page. You can create a Business Account to create a page, but this will limit some of the features available to you as a Page Admin. Per Facebook, you cannot have both a business account and personal account – you must have one or the other. Furthermore, if you are an Admin of a Page via personal profile, your profile will not be visible on the Page.
When you create a Fan Page on Facebook, here are 10 factors to be aware of that come into play:
- Updated Status and information that is published to your Page’s wall is fed to the News Feed that appears on the home page of each fan.
- There are various applications that can be added to your page, but they must have the “Add To Page” option to do so.
- You can control what content appears to the public and the level of participation your Fans can contribute, ie – their ability to add links, videos and/or photos to your page is something you control.
- Custom Boxes can be created to give your Page a unique appearance and there are applications available now that allow you to run contests and promos from within your page.
- In your wall settings, you specify where you want your new fans to “land” – either on a specific tab (such as Custom Boxes, Photos, Notes, etc.) or on the wall itself.
- If you have a website (and you know you should), there is now a “Facebook Page Widget” that you can add to your website. If you are not viewing this article via our website, a sample of the widget is available at 10 Factors of a Facebook Page Note: It is always best to link to your social profiles (or page) from your website as well as link to your website from your profiles (or page).
- You can incorporate an Facebook Ad Campaign via your Page with the option to target a specific market and send those who click on your ad to either your Fan Page, an Event created via your Page, or to your website.
- SMS subscription is also now available to your Fans.
- Events can be created and published to the public, so those who are not a fan can see them in search.
- Your Page is public, and your Page is completely visible. Once your visitors become a fan, they will be able to connect with you.
We realize that Facebook is a complicated structure and there’s a lot that goes into the platform, making it difficult for the average user to understand it all. Tip: If you manage a page, there is not yet a Facebook notification service in place to let you know when people reply to posts on your wall. However, by noting the “like” option after your post, or by commenting yourself, you will be notified in the “notifications” when a subsequent post is made.
